The Chunyaxche lagoon is an ancient canal made by the Maya approximately 1000 years ago. This tour will take your breath away, taking you on an amazing journey through one of the most impressive and pristine areas of the Riviera Maya, the Sian Ka’an biosphere. Enter the natural reserve and immerse yourself in an ample variety of ecosystems, including mangroves, wetlands, natural and exuberant canals. All this surrounded by the tropical jungle hosting the rich diversity of wildlife. Welcome to a place that harbors animals such as jaguars, manatees, dolphins, tapirs.
The ancient Maya settlement of Muyil thrived from 300 A.C. until 1200 A.C. Its location adjacent to the Chunyaxche lagoon made it the perfect spot for commerce by canoe during the Maya civilization. Muyil may seem small, however it has lots of ceremonial buildings immersed in the tropical jungle. You’ll feel like a true explorer while entering the settlement through a 500 meter (1640 feet) long trail across the mangrove. Keep an eye out for birds, fauna and flora as well as watering holes. Are you bold enough to climb the watch tower and enjoy its spectacular birds eye view?
Attention! Bring a long sleeved shirt (rashguard style) for swimming/floating in the Sian Ka’an canal. The use of sunscreen or any other type of lotions is not allowed.
